Witnesses to the Presence of God The monks of the Eremitic Order of Mount Carmel are inspired by that same spirit of faith that infused the pre-Christian, monotheist hermits of Mount Carmel. These solitaries had lived on the holy mountain centuries before the birth of the Christ. It was the holy Prophet Elijah who first organized them into a coenobitic community. These ascetics lived in individual solitude while coming together to worship God and for meals. Within a year of their founding in 1994, the members of the Order established Annunciation Monastery of Honolulu, Hawaii. They live as a group, with each monk maintaining an individual lifestyle of enclosed semi-eremitic solitude while "working in the world" to support one another's sustenance. That is the practical application of their individual commitments to God and to each other in obedience to the commonweal under the guidance of an abbot. |
